Multinational food and beverage company PepsiCo intends to create a new supply chain to import potatoes from Myanmar for its products including Doritos and Lay’s potato chips. Currently smallholder farmers in Myanmar are dependent on local brokers who provide farming inputs at high costs/low quality and then purchase produce grown at low cost from these farmers. The aim of the project is to increase incomes for farmers through connections to regional markets in PepsiCo’s supply chain.


Business for Development has conducted a series of in-country missions for PepsiCo identifying farmer groups, collaboration partners and viable business models to support the development of smallholder farmers in Shan State. As a result B4MD has formulated a business plan centered on the LINC model for PepsiCo as the company seeks to expand its operations in Myanmar.
